Legendary director Mike Lee returns to the modern world with a fierce, compassionate, and often darkly humorous exploration of family and the thorny bonds that bind us together. Reuniting with Lee for the first time since the Oscar-nominated Secrets and Lies, the incredible Marianne Jean-Baptiste stars as Pansy, a woman afflicted by fear and illness, prone to violent tirades against her husband, her son, and anyone who looks her way. Meanwhile, her quiet younger sister, played by Michelle Osteen (Another Year), is a single mother whose life is as different from Pansy’s as her conflicting temperaments, filled with warmth shared by her salon clients and her daughters. This large-scale film from a noted playwright takes us deep into kinship, debt, and that most enduring of human mystery: Though life is filled with pain and deprivation, we still find ways to love those we call family.
